About BackInTime

Who We Are

BackInTime is an AI-powered digital heritage platform built for families who believe that old photographs deserve more than a dusty shoebox or a forgotten folder on a hard drive.

We exist at the intersection of technology and memory — combining state-of-the-art AI restoration with museum-grade archival practices and collaborative storytelling tools, so that your family's most treasured moments can be preserved, shared, and passed down for generations.

The Problem We Solve

Billions of family photographs exist in the world today — faded, torn, scratched, and slowly disappearing. Many carry no captions, no dates, no names. The people in them are often forgotten. The stories behind them are lost.

Existing tools fall short in different ways:

  • Cloud storage apps (iCloud, Google Photos) treat old photographs like any other file. There is no restoration, no heritage context, no storytelling — just storage.
  • Quick-fix restoration apps apply one-tap filters and return a flattened image. They are transactional by design, offering no archive, no provenance, and no connection to family history.

BackInTime is the third way. We restore your photographs the way a skilled conservator would — thoughtfully, accurately, and with deep respect for what they represent. And then we help you build something lasting around them.

What We Do

AI Restoration, Done Right

Our restoration engine handles scratch and tear removal, denoising, era-consistent colorization, super-resolution upscaling, and generative fill — all in a single, carefully tuned pass. We offer multiple colorization styles (Vivid, Natural, Retro, Warm Tone, Cool Tone, Sepia) and let you provide custom instructions so the result feels true to the original moment, not just technically correct.

Every restored image is accompanied by a C2PA Content Credential — a tamper-evident provenance record that documents what AI was involved and how the image was processed. This is our commitment to transparency and archival integrity.

A Vault, Not Just Storage

When you upload a photograph to BackInTime, it enters a permanent vault — organized, searchable, and protected. Your originals are preserved alongside their restored versions, with full version history. Metadata (people, places, dates, relationships) enriches every photograph, and our search lets you find images by decade, location, name, or tag.

Stories: More Than Albums

A BackInTime Story is more than a photo album. It is a curated collection of photographs anchored to a time, a place, and the people who lived through it — with room for written narrative, voice notes, and AI-assisted storytelling. Stories can be private, shared with family, or contributed to public community galleries.

Built for Families, Not Just Individuals

BackInTime supports collaborative family workspaces with clear ownership rules: the person who uploads a photo owns it, always — even when it lives inside a shared Story. Family members can contribute, curate, and view at different permission levels, and leaving a workspace never means losing your photographs.

Our Philosophy: Slow AI

We believe that the best restoration is the one that treats a photograph with the same patience and care as the moment it captured.

BackInTime embraces what we call Slow AI — a deliberate, queue-based restoration experience that is transparent about what it is doing and honest about its limits. We surface our processing pipeline, show estimated completion times, and make it easy to report errors or flag AI hallucinations. We never rush a restoration to meet an expectation of instant results.

This is not a technical limitation. It is a design choice rooted in respect for the material.

Our Promise

Your memories belong to you. BackInTime will never sell your photos, use them for advertising, or use them to train our AI without your explicit consent. Your photographs are processed solely to restore them for you — nothing else.

We are building in the Memory Economy — a space where value is emotional, multi-generational, and grounded in trust. That trust is not a feature. It is the foundation everything else is built on.

Who We're Built For

BackInTime is for:

  • Families with boxes of aging photographs they want to preserve before it's too late.
  • Memory keepers — often 45 and older — who carry the responsibility of keeping family history alive.
  • Genealogy enthusiasts building detailed, well-sourced family records.
  • Gift creators who want to give something deeply meaningful: a restored portrait, a curated family story, a printed heirloom.
  • Institutions — local museums, schools, libraries, and photo labs — looking for modern digitization and archival tools.

Where We're Headed

BackInTime is available on web, iOS, and Android, with full feature parity across all platforms. We are building toward a future where every family — regardless of geography, technical skill, or resources — has access to the tools needed to preserve their visual history.

The photographs in your attic are irreplaceable. We're here to make sure they stay that way.
